The use of Machine Learning algorithms has proliferated over the past decade. But while some predictions can seem like magic, getting there is anything but. It’s downright un-sexy: data cleaning, feature extraction and outlier removal (among other things). Even doing all of that doesn’t guarantee a model will accurately map to reality, especially when abstracted from domain expertise and business logic. In this talk, learn how to interrogate algorithms that business operators increasingly rely on.

Adam Behrens (MBA ’18) has worked as a software engineer building machine learning models at Neurable (mind-control VR) and Analytical Space (satellites). Adam previously worked in data analytics at Deloitte Consulting, and holds a masters in analytic philosophy from LSE.

What separates BuzzFeed from traditional media giants like the Wall Street Journal? It’s no longer breaking news or in-depth exposes, but something arguably much harder to get right: metrics, data pipelines, and smart tools for image based content. Come prepared for thoughts on the media landscape, #fakenews and some gif-heavy slides.

Anita Mehrotra (MBA ’18) has held numerous data scientist roles, including Buzzfeed, the Technology Labs at Accenture, and the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Information. Anita is a computational scientist and mathematician by training, and holds an SM from Harvard IACS-SEAS.

David Waller is a Partner and the Head of Data Science and Analytics for Oliver Wyman Labs. He leads projects that utilize advanced statistical and machine learning methods to solve the challenging analytical problems that lie at the heart of modern business. His team specializes in implementing solutions to especially thorny computational problems where scale and efficiency can present key obstacles to traditional approaches.

David enjoys immersing himself in the latest technologies and methods from the data scientific community, and finding applications for ideas from adjacent domains such as physics to today’s toughest business problems. He will happily discuss ‘Big Data’ topics – but only if he’s allowed to avoid calling it ‘big data.’

Prior to joining Oliver Wyman Labs, David was a Partner in Oliver Wyman’s Retail and Consumer Goods Practice. His retail expertise centers around working with large firms to improve their businesses, using cutting-edge analytics as the ‘secret sauce' for making better decisions. His experience spans the retail gamut, from merchandising and marketing through to store operations.

Nick Rellas is the co-founder and CEO of Drizly, Inc., the largest online marketplace for alcohol in the United States. Since its inception in 2012, Drizly has raised $37 million in funding, expanded from one to 40 major metropolitan markets, grown from three to 68 full-time employees, and facilitated over a million orders across the country. Rellas was named to Forbes’ “30 Under 30” and the Boston Globe’s “25 Under 25” lists for changing the way consumers purchase alcohol. Before Drizly, Nick Rellas was a Boston College student working for New England Coffee Co, one of the largest coffee manufacturers in the country. During his tenure there, Rellas focused on strategy, plant efficiency, and SKU profitability while reporting directly to the COO. It was during this time that Rellas noticed the lack of technology surrounding a regulated industry and asked himself: "Why do regulated industries and technology not mix well?” That question, combined with his newfound love for Uber in 2011, lead him to look at how mobile could transform other regulated industries, most notably alcohol. The rest, as they say, is history. Rellas got an early start on his professional career, securing work as commercial photographer throughout the eastern seaboard while still in high school. After studying Advertising Photography at Rochester Institute of Technology for two years, Rellas transferred to Boston College, double majoring in Finance and Corporate Reporting & Analysis. The switch in career paths was facilitated by close to 10 years of financial derivative trading and a passion for financial markets.

Today, Levo has grown into a leading professional network that offers millennial talent great, educational content on a range of topics – including how to negotiate your salary, dressing for the job (or promotion) you want, finding the right mentor for you, and more – as well access to peers in local and national markets who share similar interests and values through Local Levo, insights andexpert advice from some of today’s leading business leaders and innovators, like Sheryl Sandberg Kathy Calvin, Warren Buffett, and Janet Mock, with Office Hours, and more. On the backend, Levo is a resource to employers and major businesses, providing real-time data about millennial talent and what’s driving them in business through the Levo Institute.

Born in Brazil and raised in Japan and France, Caroline is a true global citizen, having lived in six countries. In addition to being multilingual (she speaks fluent Portuguese, French and Japanese), Caroline is the first woman in her family to graduate from college, with 2 younger sisters and a brother following in her entrepreneurial footsteps.
